Monk Parakeet Control

DEFRA has announced that it is taking steps to control the population of approximately 150 Monk parakeets (Myiopsitta monachus).  These birds have caused problems with electricity supplies in the USA through building their large nests on electricity pylons.  The birds exist in the wild in the UK through illegal releases and escapes of birds kept as pets, and are only found in a handful of locations.

The more common Rose-ringed parakeet (Psittacula krameri), a hole-nesting species which numbers 32,000 individuals in the SE of the UK, is not being targeted by this work.
